Zeytoonian Center Consultant Dr. David Hall Appointed President of the University of the Virgin Islands
Wellesley Hills and Westborough, Mass. – October 14, 2009 – Dr. David Hall, a member of the Zeytoonian Center for Dispute Resolution team of consultants, has been appointed president of the University of the Virgin Islands. At the Zeytoonian Center, which focuses on resolving disputes out of court, Dr. Hall lends his expertise in the areas of ethics and diversity.
Dr. Hall has had a distinguished career at Northeastern University School of Law, where he has served as former Dean of the Law School, Provost and Senior VP for Academic Affairs and law professor. His priority as dean of the Law School was improving legal education and the ethical standards of the profession, and he has called upon all law schools to be places “where the values and spiritual foundations of future lawyers are nurtured, challenged and systematically emphasized.” His two major contributions were in the area of diversity and Practice Oriented Education. In a feature article in the Wall Street Journal (1995), Harvard Law Professor Charles J. Ogletree, Jr., called Hall “one of the most important leaders in legal education today.”
Prior to joining NEU School of Law in 1988, David Hall taught at the law schools of the University of Mississippi and the University of Oklahoma and practiced with the Federal Trade Commission in Chicago. He has taught courses in contracts, bankruptcy, professional responsibility, sales, constitutional law and civil rights, and his publications include works on civil rights, the constitution and race, legal education, and social justice.
Author of The Spiritual Revitalization of the Legal Profession: A Search for Sacred Rivers, Dr. Hall advocates the practice and teaching of law from a spiritual perspective. He has lectured widely on the topics of social justice, leadership, diversity, and education.
“Professor Hall has been an inspiration to us all at the Zeytoonian Center as well as the Collaborative Law community and the legal community beyond,” said Michael Zeytoonian, Zeytoonian Center founder and director. “His grasp of the integration of one’s spiritual core and calling within the context of the legal profession, as reflected in his insightful book, is enlightening. While we are sad to lose David from the Boston area, he will continue to be a resource for the Center in the areas of ethics, diversity and restorative justice. We are thrilled for him and his family and know that he will bring a unique dimension to the University of the Virgin Islands.”
David Hall holds both a doctorate of juridical science and a LL.M. from Harvard Law School. He received his J.D. from the University of Oklahoma, where he was also awarded a master’s degree in human relations, and earned his bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University. He is a recipient of many awards, including the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Outstanding Contribution to the Legal Profession Award, the National Conference of Community and Justice Humanitarian Award, the Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Oklahoma.
